JUST IN: Rangers clinch ninth NPFL title after beating Ikorodu city
Rangers International FC have emerged champions of the Nigeria Premier Football league after defeating Ikorodu City FC 2-1 to secure a record-equalling ninth league title.
Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo scored in both halves to hand the Flying Antelopes a crucial victory and seal the championship ahead of Rivers United.
Ikorodu City reduced the deficit in the 58th minute through substitute Moses Ali after Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh failed to properly handle a long-range effort.
Rangers finished the season top of the NPFL table with 68 points from 38 matches, one point ahead of Rivers United, who ended their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Katsina United.
The triumph marks coach Fidelis Ilechukwu’s second league title with the Enugu-based side and sees Rangers equal Enyimba’s all-time record of nine NPFL titles.
Following the title success, Rangers and Rivers United will represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League.
