NANS endorses Tinubu, Nwifuru for 2027, states reasons

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has pledged support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, in 2027, citing reforms and investments that have directly benefited students.

The national students body made the declaration Monday during a courtesy visit to the Ebonyi State Governor’s Office in Abakaliki.

Nwifuru, during the visit, challenged NANS to lead reforms for an industry-driven tertiary curriculum that produces self-reliant graduates.

The President of NANS, Comrade Akintoye Babatunde Afeez, said the association is backing the Federal Government because of policies like the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the absence of strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

He commended Governor Nwifuru for investments in human capital, new specialised universities, and student support.Afeez said: “We’ve noted your huge interest and investment in the new ICT University, Oferekpe.

“You’re building a world-class institution.“We thank you for what you are doing for students. “NANS will sustain collaboration and support your re-election and that of President Tinubu in 2027.”

Governor Nwifuru, while receiving the delegation, called on NANS to work with relevant authorities to redesign tertiary courses that equip students with practical skills for the labour market.

He said: “Many courses today don’t equip students with practical skills for life after school. “Graduating students without skills demanded by industry has expired.“The labour market is as toxic as you make it. “It will instill in students the consciousness and reality of life outside the classroom.”

Nwifuru urged NANS to leave a lasting legacy by promoting courses that decongest the labour market, entrench academic excellence, and keep campuses free of cultism and violence.

He also praised the new executives for restoring unity to NANS after years of factional crises.He added: “No factions. “Since factionalisation began, nobody had the capacity to speak for NANS. “This position requires capacity to deliver, and I am happy you are delivering.”

The meeting ended with both parties pledging sustained collaboration on education reforms and student welfare.
