Nigerian labour leader, Domingo Adeleke, dies in Geneva

A Nigerian labour leader, Domingo Michael Adeleke, has died in Geneva, Switzerland, after a brief illness.

Adeleke, who was the Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), passed away while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) as part of Nigeria’s delegation.

According to reports, he fell ill during the trip and was taken for medical attention but did not survive.

His death was confirmed by an official of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who described him as a dedicated trade unionist committed to the welfare of workers.

“It is with deep sorrow that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the entire trade union movement in Nigeria, especially the 2026 Workers’ Delegates to the International Labour Conference, announce the passing of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, who died today in Geneva after a brief illness while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference,” the official said.

Adeleke was a member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) and played a key role in labour advocacy as Chairman of the Lagos State JNC, where he championed workers’ rights and welfare initiatives.

The NLC noted that throughout his career, he remained committed to promoting decent work, social justice, and improved conditions for Nigerian workers.

His passing has been described as a significant loss to Nigeria’s labour movement.
