US Stocks Rise on $500B AI Project – Report

US stocks rose last week, driven by optimism surrounding the $500B “Stargate” AI project and other major investment commitments.

Afrinvest reports that the market has gained momentum despite weak economic data and concerns about less dovish monetary policy signals. The report says, “US stocks rose sharply, boosted by positive developments, including the announcement of the $500 billion AI Stargate project and Saudi Arabia’s commitment to invest $600 billion.”

The Nasdaq and S&P 500 closed higher for the week, up 2.1% and 2.0% month-on-month, respectively. These gains were further supported by strong earnings reports from blue-chip companies, including Netflix, which reported fourth-quarter revenues of $10.2 billion, beating expectations of $10.1 billion.

Similarly, results from United Airlines, Procter & Gamble, and American Express beat market expectations, boosting investor confidence.

However, the report noted that the labor market faces some challenges as initial jobless claims rose in the week ending January 18, with an increase of 223,000, the highest level in three years.

“The higher-than-expected initial jobless claims reflect ongoing uncertainty, but investor optimism about corporate earnings and government investment commitments outweighs concerns,” Afrinvest explained.

Looking ahead, Afrinvest expects the positive momentum in the US stock market to continue, with upcoming earnings reports from major companies such as Apple, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Tesla and Amazon likely to be driving factors.

The company also highlighted the importance of China’s manufacturing PMI data and the ECB’s monetary policy statement as key factors to watch in global markets.

Despite the general optimism in the US, Afrinvest stressed that current economic and political developments will continue to influence market developments in the coming weeks.
