Affiliation accuses NUPENG of extortion, extreme levies on tanker homeowners

The Affiliation of Distributors and Transporters of Petroleum Merchandise (ADITOP) has accused the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Pure Fuel Staff (NUPENG) of extortion and extreme levies assortment inside the downstream sector.

This accusation got here on the heels of a vote of no confidence handed on the management of NUPENG by the Lagos Zone of Petroleum Tanker Drivers Department of the union (PTD). The vote of no confidence was handed on the Nationwide President, Comrade (Prince) Williams Akporeha, and the Common Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Olawale by the ADITOP which accused them of greed, rascality, impunity, manipulation, highhandedness, and gross incompetence in management.

The PTD place was the end result of an emergency assembly held by the State’s zonal executives of PTD on Monday, September 8, 2025, following a rising rigidity over Dangote Refinery and MRS Holdings Restricted’s alleged resistance to unionization of its drivers and deployment of 4,000 Compressed Pure Fuel (CNG)-powered vans throughout Nigeria for the nationwide distribution of petroleum merchandise.

In a press release on Monday in Abuja, whereas reacting to the purported strike by NUPENG, ADITOP accused NUPENG of extortion and extreme levies assortment.

Alhaji Lawal Dan-zaki, the Nationwide President of ADITOP, dissociated ADITOP from the purported strike, noting that the affiliation was primarily fashioned to checkmate the excesses of NUPENG, Petroleum Tanker Drivers, and a number of unlawful levy collectors working beneath NUPENG.

He stated that previously 5 years, the affiliation had written a number of petitions to numerous authorities companies complaining about NUPENG’s extortion and unlawful actions inside the downstream sector.

These petitions, he stated, had been adjudicated by the Inspector-Common of Police, Division of State Safety Providers, Nationwide Safety Advisor, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Dan-zaki stated that NUPENG consumed this extortion, whereas remitting zero taxes to the Federal Authorities.

“NUPENG, PTD, and lots of different unions and associations hiding beneath the NUPENG umbrella, extort ADITOP members and depot homeowners one Naira per litre of each product loaded in a depot.

“Moreover, NUPENG, by way of PTD, collects an extra one Naira per litre of loaded product by any marketer. That is along with loading costs of N80,000 to N100,000 per truck.

“That is outright extortion and financial sabotage by NUPENG, PTD, and their affiliated unions and associations,” he stated.
