Frontier Airline 'bomb' ATC call sparks hijack fears: What happened on Flight 2539

A Frontier Airlines flight travelling from Columbus, Ohio, to Atlanta in the United States triggered a major security response on Sunday, March 29, after a passenger allegedly made verbal bomb threats while the aircraft was preparing to land.

According to Frontier Airlines, the incident occurred on Flight 2539 as it approached Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, prompting authorities to treat the situation as a potential security threat.

The aircraft landed safely at about 5:07 pm and was directed to a remote area away from the terminal as law enforcement responded, Fox 5 Atlanta reported citing the Atlanta Police Department.
Officials later determined that the bomb threat was not credible, though the incident prompted the highest level of aviation emergency response. The passenger suspected of making the threats was detained, but authorities have not publicly identified the individual till the time of writing this report.

ATC call raises alarm

Audio circulating on social media purportedly captured communication between the pilots of Flight 2539 and air traffic control (ATC) in which the pilot warned of a “potential bomb on board”.

The clip sparked speculation online about a possible hijacking attempt.

However, the authenticity of the audio could not be independently verified.

Passenger accounts describe tense moments

Passengers onboard described chaotic scenes as flight attendants attempted to control the situation during the aircraft’s descent.

“It was stressful,” one passenger said, according to a report by WSBTV.com.

Passenger Jessica Kinder said flight attendants quickly issued safety instructions to travellers. “The flight attendants started saying, ‘Heads down, hands up, heads down, hands up,” Kinder said, as per WSBTV.com.

Another passenger, Keyaira Smith, told WSBTV.com that the individual causing the disturbance repeatedly ignored instructions from the crew.

“He kept standing. The pilot told him, flight attendants, to sit down,” Smith said, as per the report. “He said that he was going to threaten or kill the flight attendants.”

Investigation underway

After the aircraft landed, passengers exited the plane using air stairs and were transported to the terminal by bus while officers carried out security checks.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed it is leading the investigation.

In a statement, the agency said there is no ongoing danger to the public. “FBI Georgia responded, along with Atlanta Police, this afternoon after a flight from Columbus to Atlanta was disrupted by an unruly passenger,” the bureau said.

Investigators are interviewing witnesses and will consult with the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia on whether federal charges should be filed, the FBI added.

Police also confirmed the situation is currently not being treated as a hijacking.
