Indian-origin man, 27, shot dead in Canada in suspected gang-related attack

An Indian-origin man was shot dead in Canada’s Surrey in what police say appears to be a targeted attack linked to organised crime. The victim has been identified as Jasman Sekhon, 27.

According to CTV News, the shooting occurred Saturday evening around 6:40 pm at a townhouse complex on the 15100 block of 60 Avenue, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

“Mr. Sekhon had previous interactions with the police and was believed to be involved in the drug trade. Early indications suggest this was a targeted incident related to organised crime,” IHIT said in a statement quoted by CTV News.
Residents described a terrifying scene. Witnesses told CTV News that Sekhon was chased by two young men wearing masks and hoodies who opened fire after he fell to the ground.

One neighbour, who rushed outside to try and help, said it was immediately clear Sekhon had died due to the multiple visible gunshot wounds.

Another resident, caught by surprise while making dinner, said, “I didn’t dare look out the window.”

CCTV footage reportedly captured at least 30 shots being fired behind the complex, along with screams from nearby residents.

“Upon arrival, members located a man apparently suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, the man was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene,” the IHIT statement said.

About 15 minutes after the shooting, police found a blue Hyundai SUV which was burning near 186 Street and 44 Avenue. Police say such vehicles are often associated with gang-related violence.

“This was a brazen shooting in what is usually a quiet neighbourhood,” said IHIT spokesperson Sergeant Freda Fong.

The official added that investigators are actively working to understand the circumstances of the homicide and are trying to identify everyone involved in the attack.

Investigators are asking anyone who was at the townhouse complex or near the location of the burning vehicle on March 28, between 6 and 7:30 pm, to come forward with any information or video footage.

This marks the third time in recent weeks that Surrey’s homicide team has been called to the city, CTV News noted.
