NASA unveils $20-billion Moon missions, nuclear spacecraft and Mars exploration

NASA on Tuesday, March 24, laid out an ambitious roadmap to expand America’s presence in space, with plans to build a permanent human base on the Moon, test nuclear-powered spacecraft, and send a new generation of helicopters to explore Mars.

The announcement, made at the agency’s ‘Ignition’ event, signals a shift from short-term missions to long-term operations in space, with a sharper focus on speed and execution amid rising global competition.

Moon plan

At the centre of the plan is the Artemis programme, which will drive NASA’s return to the Moon. The upcoming Artemis II will carry four astronauts around the Moon, marking the first such mission since 1972. Missions that follow will go further, focusing on building infrastructure such as habitats, power systems and logistics needed for a sustained human presence.

NASA plans to significantly increase the pace of lunar missions. Starting with Artemis IV in 2028, the agency expects to conduct landings at least once every six months. Earlier missions like Artemis III will be used to test systems and prepare for long-term operations on the lunar surface. The agency is expected to invest about $20 billion to support continuous activity on the Moon.

Nuclear space push

A major part of the roadmap is the use of nuclear technology. NASA, in partnership with the US Department of Energy, plans to deploy a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030 to provide power during long lunar nights. It is also preparing to test nuclear propulsion in deep space through the Space Reactor-1 Freedom, scheduled before 2028. This mission could make future travel to Mars faster and more efficient.

The same mission is expected to deploy a fleet of next-generation helicopters on Mars, building on the success of Ingenuity. These aerial vehicles will help scientists explore areas that are difficult for rovers to access, expanding the scope of research on the Red Planet.

While pushing deeper into space, NASA is also planning a transition closer to Earth. The International Space Station (ISS) will continue to play a key role in the near term, but the agency is preparing to shift towards commercially-operated space stations. The goal is to avoid any gap in human presence in low Earth orbit while encouraging private sector participation.

What NASA leadership said

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency is working to speed up decision-making and reduce delays. “We have moved quickly, taken action to cut bureaucracy, and introduced deregulation focused on empowering the workforce,” he said, adding that the changes reflect the urgency of a growing global space race.

Overall, NASA’s new plan marks a clear move towards sustained human activity beyond Earth. By combining frequent Moon missions, new technologies and deeper partnerships with industry, the agency is aiming to lay the groundwork for long-term exploration of the Moon, Mars and beyond.
