National Assembly Set To Pass ₦58.47 Trillion 2026 Budget

The National Assembly is expected to pass the ₦58.472 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill this week as lawmakers reconvene from a short legislative break.

Sources within the legislature told The Nation that the Appropriation Committees of the Senate and the House of Representatives are expected to lay their reports on the budget during plenary.

The development comes as the funding for the extended implementation of the 2024 and 2025 appropriation acts, particularly capital projects rolled over from the previous budgets, is set to terminate.

According to sources, the report on the 2026 budget will likely be presented after lawmakers reconvene on Monday.

The budget report is expected to be considered and passed separately by both chambers, either during Monday’s plenary or on Tuesday.

Lawmakers are also expected to conclude work on the budget before proceeding on their Easter break later in the week.

Sources in the National Assembly indicated that lawmakers are eager to pass the budget quickly in order to focus on political consultations and re-election campaigns ahead of the next elections.

This follows the release of the electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

One of the sources said lawmakers were determined to complete the legislative process on the budget within the week.

“I am aware that the Appropriations Committee has been working to ensure that the report of the 2026 Appropriations Bill is ready for presentation this week in line with the directive of the Senate President

,” the source said.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had earlier directed the Senate Committee on Appropriation to expedite work on the budget before the Senate adjourned plenary two weeks ago.

He stressed the need for the committee to ensure that its report was ready immediately after lawmakers resumed sitting.

“I urge the Committee on Appropriations to expedite work on the 2026 budget and ensure that its report is ready for consideration immediately upon resumption,” Akpabio said.

“We must not allow avoidable delays to derail the timely passage of this critical national document.”

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the spokespersons of both chambers, Yemi Adaramodu (Senate) and Akin Rotimi (House of Representatives), were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

However, insiders within the National Assembly maintained that the 2026 budget is likely to be passed before the Easter break.
