Nigerians Are Tired Of Mourning – CAN Condemns Plateau Killings, Demands Justice

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for decisive action over the recent killings in Plateau State, urging authorities to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the attack.

The President of CAN, Daniel Okoh, described the incident as both tragic and unacceptable, stressing that Nigerians are weary of repeated violence and official statements without concrete action.

In a statement issued late Monday, Okoh expressed deep concern over the rising spate of attacks, particularly the latest incident in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area.

“Nigerians are tired of mourning. Nigerians are tired of statements. Nigerians want to see action,” he said.

“Those responsible for this atrocity must be found, arrested, and made to face justice; swiftly and decisively. Anything less will only deepen the sense that life in our country is no longer protected.”

Sunday’s attack reportedly claimed 28 lives and left several others injured, sparking outrage among residents and protests in the affected community.

The Christian body stressed that the attack struck at the core of public trust and must be comprehensively investigated to prevent future occurrences.

“Our security institutions must not only respond; they must stay ahead of these threats,” CAN said, while acknowledging the efforts of the Plateau State Government.

However, Okoh warned that temporary responses would not suffice.

“But let it be said clearly: temporary measures are not enough. The people of Plateau, and indeed all Nigerians, deserve lasting security, not periodic reassurance,” he added.

CAN urged citizens to remain calm but vigilant, insisting that justice must be served for the victims while adequate protection is guaranteed for the living.

“We owe the dead justice. We owe the living protection. And we owe our future a country where no community wakes up to gunfire on a sacred day,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, confirmed that 28 people lost their lives in the attack.

In a statewide broadcast, the governor described the incident as deeply painful.

“This unfortunate event led to the loss of 28 innocent lives and left many others injured. I feel deeply the weight of the pain inflicted on our people,” he said.

Mutfwang, however, assured residents that the state would not bow to fear or intimidation, pledging to strengthen security measures.

“We shall emerge stronger, united, and resolute in our faith and commitment to peace,” he said.

“We must deploy every available resource to defend our people, protect lives and property, and safeguard the territorial integrity of our state. Plateau shall remain strong and peaceful.”

The governor also visited the affected community and injured victims on Monday, as the state government imposed a curfew in the area to restore order.
