Oyo fixes LG election for December 2026

The Oyo State Unbiased Electoral Fee has fastened Tuesday, December 29, 2026, for the conduct of native authorities elections throughout the 33 native authorities areas of the state.

The Chairman of the fee, Babatunde Adeniyi, disclosed this in a press release launched in Ibadan, the state capital, on Tuesday.

The event, in response to the assertion dated March 4, 2026, adopted the revision of the Presidential and Nationwide Meeting elections by the Unbiased Nationwide Electoral Fee from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027 — a date beforehand scheduled by OYSIEC for the conduct of the native authorities council elections within the state.

Adeniyi stated the brand new date was necessitated by the revision of the presidential and Nationwide Meeting elections timetable by INEC, which created a conflict with the sooner date fastened by OYSIEC.

The chairman stated, “The Oyo State Unbiased Electoral Fee hereby informs political events, safety businesses, stakeholders and most people that the Native Authorities Election earlier scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2027, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, December 29, 2026, between 8:00 a.m. and three:00 p.m.”

The assertion learn, “The Oyo State Unbiased Electoral Fee hereby informs political events, safety businesses, stakeholders, and most people that the Native Authorities Election earlier scheduled for Saturday, 16 January 2027, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 29 December 2026, between 8:00 a.m. and three:00 p.m.

“This determination grew to become obligatory following the latest revision of the nationwide electoral timetable by the Unbiased Electoral Fee, which moved the Presidential and Nationwide Meeting elections from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027 – a date beforehand scheduled by OYSIEC for the conduct of Native Authorities Elections in Oyo State – thereby creating an operational and logistical overlap.

“After due session, the Fee resolved to reschedule the election to Tuesday, 29 December 2026, to forestall operational congestion, guarantee optimum safety deployment, defend voter participation, keep administrative readability, and safeguard the integrity of the electoral course of.”

The OYSIEC boss stated electioneering campaigns by political events will finish at midnight on Monday, December 28, 2026, whereas a rerun election will maintain on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, if obligatory.

He urged political events and related stakeholders to proceed their preparations in accordance with the revised timetable, including that the fee remained dedicated to conducting a peaceable, clear, credible and inclusive native authorities election.
