Strait of Hormuz crisis: UN chief warns of global fallout as tensions escalate, launches task force

Amid rising tensions in West Asia, the United Nations has issued a stark warning over potential global consequences if maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted.

Highlighting risks to humanitarian aid and agricultural production, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced the formation of a dedicated task force to address the unfolding crisis.

According to a statement delivered by Stephane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, the task force will primarily focus on developing and proposing technical mechanisms specifically designed to meet humanitarian needs in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Immediate action is essential to mitigate these consequences,” Dujarric was quoted as saying by Reuters.

It will be led by Jorge Moreira da Silva, who currently serves as Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and will include representatives from key global bodies such as the UNCTAD, International Maritime Organization, and International Chamber of Commerce. Additional entities may be brought in as required.

The UN noted that the mechanism would draw lessons from previous initiatives like the Black Sea Grain Initiative, the UNVIM, and the UN2720 Mechanism. The proposed framework aims to facilitate the movement of fertilizers and related raw materials while maintaining compliance with international law and respecting national sovereignty.

“The task force will now be in touch with all the relevant member ‌states to see how this can be operationalised. We hope that all member states involved will support this, especially for the sake of people, who are already being impacted,” Dujarric added.

If successfully implemented, the initiative would boost Member States’ confidence in the diplomatic approach to the dispute and represent a significant step toward a broader political settlement. As part of these efforts, the Secretary-General’s personal envoy Jean Arnault will lead political engagement with concerned nations, supported by the newly formed task force.

The warning comes as disruptions in the Strait, one of the world’s most important energy corridors, threaten to trigger widespread economic and humanitarian consequences.

UN and other experts warn that interrupted fertilizer shipments and rising energy prices are causing food price increases in vulnerable nations, perhaps leading to a long-term setback just as many were emerging from previous global shocks.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump made controversial remarks referring to the vital oil-shipping route and a key choke point in the Iran war as the ‘Strait of Trump’. During his speech at the Future Investment Initiative in Miami, he said Iran has to “open up the Strait of Trump — I mean, Hormuz,” garnering laughs from the crowd.

The President later added, “Excuse me. I’m so sorry. Such a terrible mistake. The fake news will say, ‘He accidentally said’ — No, there’s no accidents with me, not too many. If there were, we’d have a major story.”
