Thieves steal 12 tons of KitKat bars in Europe chocolate heist

Thieves have stolen more than 400,000 KitKat chocolate bars, weighing around 12 tons, in a major heist in Europe.
 

The confectionery, produced by Nestlé, was taken from a truck transporting the goods along a route from a factory in central Italy to Poland on Monday, March 30, according to a statement from KitKat.
 

“The vehicle and its contents remain unaccounted for, and investigations are ongoing in close collaboration with local authorities and supply chain partners,” the statement said.

In total, 413,793 KitKat bars were stolen. Each bar is traceable through its batch number, and the company has urged anyone who comes across matching products to report them.

The incident highlights growing concerns around cargo theft. A joint report by the International Union of Marine Insurance and the Transported Asset Protection Association found that cargo theft and freight fraud are increasing and becoming more sophisticated.
 

“We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat – but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally,” a spokesperson said. “While we appreciate the criminals’ taste, cargo theft remains a serious and escalating issue for businesses of all sizes.”
 

KitKat later reassured consumers in an Instagram statement that there are no safety concerns and that supply has not been affected.
 

This is not the first large-scale chocolate theft in Europe. In July 2023, Joby Pool was sentenced to 18 months in prison after stealing around 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs from an industrial unit using a stolen truck.
