Trump signals willingness to end Iran war even if Strait of Hormuz remains shut: Report

US President Donald Trump has told senior aides he is prepared to wind down the American military campaign against Iran even if the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing administration officials.

However, there is no official confirmation yet.

If true, the decision marks a huge breakthrough in the West Asia war that has been going on for a month now. Trump and his advisers reportedly concluded that a full‑scale operation to reopen the waterway would extend the war beyond their targeted four‑to‑six‑week timeline. 

Under the plan outlined internally, the US would first seek to achieve core military objectives, including degrading Iran’s naval and missile capabilities, before pressing it to relent diplomatically.

The reported change in approach comes soon after Trump warned it would “blow up and completely obliterate” key Iranian energy infrastructure, including electric power plants, oil wells and the crucial export hub at Kharg Island, if Tehran failed to agree to terms and reopen Hormuz.

Posted on Truth Social, Trump also repeated claims of ongoing talks with Iran except this time he said the US was negotiating with “a new, more reasonable regime’.

Iran has so far refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz unconditionally, and the waterway has remained effectively blocked since the US and Israel first carried out coordinated attacks on February 28.
