Ukraine apologises after drones crash in Finland

Ukraine has apologised to Finland after two drones crashed in the country’s south, saying they were likely diverted off course by Russian interference. A spokesperson for Ukraine’s foreign ministry, Georgiy Tykhy, said the incident was unintended.

“Under no circumstances were any Ukrainian drones directed toward Finland. The most likely cause is interference from Russian electronic warfare systems. We have already apologised to the Finnish side for this incident,” he told reporters.

The drones landed near Kouvola, prompting a response from Finnish authorities, who deployed a fighter jet to assess the situation. The Finnish Defence Ministry said one drone fell north of Kouvola while another landed to the east of the city.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed he had discussed the incident with Alexander Stubb. “Alex and I see the situation in the same way. We are sharing all necessary information,” Zelensky said.

The development comes amid escalating drone warfare between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides increasingly deploying unmanned systems in cross-border operations. Finnish officials said an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet was sent on an identification mission following the incident, as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
