Who is Nisha Mehta, AIIMS Delhi alumna, now Nepal’s health minister

AIIMS Delhi said, “This remarkable achievement is a moment of great pride for the institution and the nursing community at large.” It added, “Mehta’s journey from bedside nursing to a key policy-making role reflects the expanding scope and leadership potential of the nursing profession.”
Who is Nisha Mehta?
Born in Sunsari district in Koshi Province, Nisha Mehta is a Nepalese nurse and politician, as per The Himalayan Times. She is married to Saroj Singh Koshi, the Chief of the Provincial Police Hospital and a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
Mehta completed her Bachelor’s degree in nursing at AIIMS Delhi in 2010 and later earned a master’s degree in nursing in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, as per news agency ANI.
After finishing her studies, she returned to Nepal and worked at Birat Teaching Hospital. She was a nurse and an associate professor there.
She also served as the administrative secretary of the Nepal Police Wives Association in Koshi province.
Mehta entered parliament through the ‘proportional representation’ system, where parties allocate seats based on their overall vote share. The Rastriya Swatantra Party nominated her to represent the Madhesi community.
Mehta became a member of the Pratinidhi Sabha representing the Rastriya Swatantra Party after the 2026 general election.
Nepal elections 2026
Nearly two decades after inclusive policies were introduced, women now make up around 33% of Nepal’s parliament.
In the current 15-member Cabinet, five ministers are women. This includes Mehta, alongside Sobita Gautam, Sita Badi, Pratibha Rawal, and Geeta Chaudhary.
Mehta was elected in the 2026 polls held after the government led by former prime minister K P Sharma Oli was removed last year following large-scale youth-led protests against corruption and governance issues.
In the 2026 elections, the Rastriya Swatantra Party secured 182 of the 275 seats in the House of Representatives to form a majority government. Balendra Shah took oath as Nepal’s youngest prime minister at 35 after the landslide win.
