2026 World Cup: ‘It would be amazing’ – Rooney names player he’d like to win trophy

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has admitted that he would love to see Cristiano Ronaldo win the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer if England do not prevail.

His comments came after Bruno Fernandes said that his dream would be for Portugal to win the prestigious tournament to honor Ronaldo for all his contributions to football.

Cristiano Ronaldo has established himself as one of the greatest superstars of all time, helping Portugal win three trophies to date.

The 41-year-old is also the most-capped and highest goalscorer in the men’s game, registering 143 goals and 46 assists in 226 appearances across all competitions for A Selecao.

However, Ronaldo has yet to win the World Cup in his five attempts. The Al-Nassr ace is set to have one final opportunity to complete his trophy cabinet this summer, with Portugal being one of the favorites to go all the way.

During a recent segment on The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC, Fernandes told Rooney:

“Wrapping up all this last World Cup with Cristiano winning it would be something amazing. I really hope we can make it happen, not just for Portugal, but for everything Cristiano gave to football and the world.”

Rooney, who memorably played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United between 2004 and 2009, replied, “”I would love to see you and Cristiano win the World Cup. Go and enjoy it. Have fun. And I hope you do well.”

Ronaldo is the only player in football history to score in five different World Cups, with his best finish being fourth place at the 2006 edition.
