69 die, 246 injured in Lagos road crashes in Q1 2026 –LASTMA

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported that 69 people lost their lives in road accidents across the state in the first quarter of 2026, while 246 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the general manager of LASTMA disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos on Sunday.
He said the agency also cleared more than 600 accident scenes during the period and resolved over 900 infractions involving trucks and other articulated vehicles.
According to him, enforcement efforts were intensified, with about 4,900 physical operations carried out, while technology-driven systems recorded 17,942 traffic offences.
Bakare-Oki stressed that the agency maintains “zero tolerance for traffic infractions,” adding that impounded vehicles are promptly taken before the Lagos state mobile court for prosecution.
He also noted improvements in traffic management operations, including the repositioning and overhaul of equipment and recovery vehicles to enhance response times and reduce travel delays for commuters.
Bakare-Oki further revealed that LASTMA has begun implementing a year-long training programme for its personnel, targeting over 1,000 officers through both internal and external capacity-building initiatives.
He said consultants have been engaged to strengthen staff performance, assuring that more training programmes would be rolled out throughout 2026 to improve service delivery across the state.
