The Anambra State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Patrick Obianyo, has announced the immediate suspension of all planned and proposed congresses across the state.

The decision was contained in a statement dated April 6, signed by Obianyo and the state secretary, Lawrence Okeke, and made available in Awka on Tuesday.

The statement, captioned “Suspension of all congresses in Anambra State”, said: “The African Democratic Congress, the Anambra State Chapter of the party, under the leadership of Patrick Obianyo, hereby announces the immediate suspension of all planned and proposed congresses across the state until further notice.”

It added: “This decision underscores our unwavering commitment to the rule of law, due process, and respect for judicial authority.”

The party urged members to remain calm.

It said: “We therefore call on all party members and stakeholders to remain calm, law-abiding, and peaceful throughout this period.”

It also warned against unauthorised actions.

It said: “This is to inform the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state not to recognise anything done by MRMR and those parading themselves in the state.”

The statement reaffirmed the legitimacy of the current leadership.

It said: “For the avoidance of doubt, the tenure of the current ADC Executive Committee in Anambra State, as well as in other states, remains constitutionally valid and duly recognised by INEC.”

It added: “Consequently, the general public is strongly advised to disregard any directives, announcements, or actions from unauthorised individuals falsely parading themselves as party leaders.”

The party said new dates would be announced after consultations.

It said: “The party will duly communicate new dates for congresses and conventions following the conclusion of ongoing national consultations and meetings.”

It urged unity among members.

It said: “We urge all members and supporters of the ADC to continue to uphold peace, unity, and discipline as we navigate this period.”

The development comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the party following INEC’s decision to derecognise the Senator David Mark-led National Working Committee.
