APC 2027: Orisun Igbomina cautions against zoning, says winning strategy must prevail

By Demola Akinyemi, Ilorin
Ilorin — The President of Orisun Igbomina, a socio-cultural group in Kwara State, Chief Gbenga Awoyale, has cautioned that ceding the governorship ticket to Kwara North without strategic planning could pose challenges to the electoral prospects of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 election.
Awoyale, in a statement made available to journalists in Ilorin on Monday, advised that if the APC is to retain Kwara State and sustain the gains of the current administration, it must prioritise a widely accepted and strategically positioned candidate, while managing zoning through consensus-building.
He warned that the path to victory lies in unity, strategy, broad-based acceptance, and responsible leadership, rather than sentiment or poorly executed zoning arrangements.
According to him, ongoing political discussions within the APC in Kwara State ahead of the 2027 governorship election require sincerity, strategic thinking, and a clear focus on electoral success.
While acknowledging calls for power shift to Kwara North Senatorial District, Awoyale said such aspirations should be considered alongside broader political realities and electability.
“Politics at this level requires structure, grassroots engagement, coalition-building, and strategic outreach across all senatorial districts,” he said.
He emphasised that zoning, though a useful mechanism for inclusion, should not override the primary objective of winning elections, noting that poorly managed arrangements could affect party cohesion and mobilisation.
Awoyale also referenced political developments in other states to illustrate the importance of strategy, alliances, and timing in achieving electoral success.
He called on stakeholders within the APC to embrace inclusivity through dialogue and place competence, capacity, and electability at the forefront of decision-making.
