Army interrogates Forest Guard over alleged security breach in Kwara

An operational base of the Nigerian Army in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State is reportedly interrogating a forest guard over alleged links to criminal elements.

The suspect, identified as Zakari Usman, was arrested following intelligence reports linked to a letter that circulated about two weeks ago. The letter, reportedly written in Hausa, warned residents of Venra, a community a few kilometres from Kaiama, of a possible attack.

Sources in the area expressed concerns about the activities of some forest guards, particularly those recruited locally, alleging that there may be cases of information leakage that could undermine security efforts. These claims, however, remain unverified.

It was also gathered that the letter reportedly listed names of individuals in the Venra community but did not specify a date for any planned attack.

According to local sources, the arrest of Zakari Usman was carried out through intelligence-led operations involving security agencies and forest guards.

There are also concerns within the community about possible collaboration between some individuals and criminal groups, although no official confirmation has been provided.

During preliminary questioning, the suspect was reported to have made statements regarding personal financial difficulties. These claims have not been independently verified.

Further reports suggest that the letter may have been intended to create panic within the community. However, this remains part of ongoing investigations.

Additional accounts indicate that the suspect had previously been involved in informal business arrangements related to forest resources, which may have led to disputes. Details of these claims are still unclear.

Sources also stated that several young men were earlier apprehended in connection with activities in the forest without proper authorisation. During questioning, they reportedly mentioned the suspect’s name, which contributed to the ongoing investigation.

A local source, who requested anonymity, said the matter is currently under investigation by the military for further clarification.

When contacted, the Acting Information Officer of Savannah Shield, Captain J. Yaya, did not confirm or deny the development but advised caution in reporting security-related matters.

“You can go ahead and publish your story, but there is a need for proper engagement to ensure accurate understanding of security issues,” he said.
