Benue SUBEB Chair champions ABEP curriculum review at national stakeholders’ dialogue

The Executive Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, has highlighted the transformative potential of Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP) in integrating out-of-school children into the formal education system.

The Special Assistant to the Chairman on Corporate Communications and Community Engagements, Msughter Ataigbough in a statement said she made the assertion at the National Stakeholders’ Dialogue on the Review of the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP) Curriculum, convened by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) in collaboration with TaRL Africa Nigeria.

The high-level dialogue brought together policymakers, development partners, and education stakeholders from across Nigeria to discuss strategies for enhancing the ABEP curriculum and expanding access to basic education for over-age and out-of-school learners.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Adagba stressed the importance of strong advocacy at the state level to ensure broader awareness, deeper ownership, and coordinated implementation across sub-national governments.

“ABEP presents a strategic pathway to ensure that every child, regardless of age or circumstance, gains access to quality basic education,” Dr. Adagba said.

“The success of future phases depends on our ability to strengthen collaboration between federal and state agencies and engage communities effectively,” she added.

Dr. Adagba further noted that Benue State is already taking proactive steps aligned with ABEP’s objectives through the recently launched Project BRACE-UP (Building Rights to Access and Compulsory Education for Un-enrolled Pupils), an initiative aimed at tackling the persistent challenge of out-of-school children in the state.

The statement noted that the stakeholders’ dialogue forms part of the Federal Ministry of Education’s ongoing efforts to foster shared understanding and strengthen state-level ownership of the ABEP curriculum review process, ensuring a coordinated approach to improving basic education nationwide.
