Close shops, community begs Nigerians as S’Africans plan protest

A Nigerian community has urged Nigerians living in the Gauteng Province of South Africa to stay indoors and close businesses as South Africans in the region plan to embark on a protest from April 27 to 29, 2026.
This was disclosed in a press statement made available to Diaspora Tales by the President of the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa, Rev Frank Onyekwelu.
He said South Africans had proposed an anti-foreign nationals’ march and protest in the province.
While he did not state what might have triggered the proposed demonstration, Diaspora Tales gathered that this might not be unconnected with the installation of Eze Ndigbo by the community, which was met with outrage by South Africans.
Speaking about the planned protest, the NICASA leader said, “In view of the nature and underlying sentiments associated with such protests, and considering past experiences, we strongly advise all members of our community to exercise maximum caution and vigilance during this period.”
He called for limited movement among Nigerians, stating that they “should minimise unnecessary travel and movement within affected areas, especially in identified protest zones and city centres.”
“Business owners are strongly encouraged to consider temporarily closing shops, offices, and other business premises during the protest days as a precautionary measure to safeguard lives and property.”
Onyekwelu also advised Nigerian community members to avoid protest routes, large gatherings, and areas where tensions might escalate.
He enjoined Nigerians to monitor credible news sources in their homes and follow updates from the association and other relevant authorities, adding that communication lines should be kept open with family and community leaders to report any suspicious activities.
“We urge all Nigerians to remain law-abiding, avoid confrontations, and cooperate with local law enforcement authorities at all times,” the statement added.
