Convention: Wike Speaks On ADC’s Request For Eagle Square, Velodrome

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday dismissed allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that it was denied access to Eagle Square for its activities.

Naija News reports that Wike also addressed public concerns over recent structural damage at the Kugbo Bus Terminal.

Speaking during a project inspection tour in Abuja, the minister described the allegation as unfounded and an attempt to attract public sympathy.

According to him, the Federal Capital Territory Administration had not received any formal request from the party for the use of Eagle Square.

“We do not deny access; these events actually generate revenue for the government.

“Who denied them? I am not aware of any such development, and I don’t even know which party you are referring to. If it is the African Democratic Congress, such claims are their usual attempt to gain public sympathy,” Wike said.

He explained that organisations seeking to use the facility must follow due process, including submitting a formal application through the Abuja Investments Company Limited, the agency responsible for managing the venue, and paying the required fees.

Wike also clarified that the Velodrome at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium is not under the control of the FCTA but the National Sports Commission.

“As we speak, no formal application has been submitted to the Abuja Investments Company Limited. When the APC used the venue, and the PDP used the Stadium Velodrome, they complied with the process. We do not deny anyone access if the rules are followed,”

he added.

Wike Addresses Kugbo Bus Terminal Damage

The minister also sought to ease concerns about the condition of the Kugbo Bus Terminal following reports of structural damage from a windstorm.

He explained that the storm damaged the roofing sheets due to the terminal’s elevated location, but insisted that the structure itself remains intact.

According to him, repair works have already commenced, and there was no casualty from the incident.

On ongoing infrastructure projects, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of work across several sites in the Federal Capital Territory.

He disclosed that road works under the current phase are expected to be completed by May 15, while the installation of streetlights will be concluded by May 31.

The minister also inspected the Wassa artisan village, a facility being developed to relocate mechanics and other informal sector operators to a permanent location.

“Successive administrations have promised this relocation, but we are finally fulfilling that commitment,” Wike said.

He added that the government is already working out modalities for relocating artisans to the new site, noting that the progress of projects was due to a “mutual commitment” between the government and contractors to meet deadlines and ensure prompt payments.
