Court Denies El-Rufai Bail Over ‘Serious’ Corruption Charges

A Kaduna State High Court has refused the bail application filed by former governor, Nasir El-Rufai, citing the gravity of the allegations and concerns over possible interference with investigations.

Naija News reports that Justice D.H. Khobo delivered the ruling on April 21, 2026, in a case instituted by the Federal Republic of Nigeria through the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

The court held that the circumstances of the case did not favour granting bail at this stage.

In his application, the former governor sought bail either on self-recognisance or upon such liberal terms as the Court may deem fit.

He argued that the charges were non-capital and therefore bailable, adding that he had strong community ties, fixed addresses, and assets that eliminated any flight risk.

El-Rufai also told the court he voluntarily returned from Egypt to honour an invitation by authorities and described the charges as “fundamentally defective” and “unintelligible.”

He further cited health concerns, claiming he required specialist medical attention.

The anti-graft agency opposed the request, describing the alleged offences as “economically sabotaging.”

It argued that El-Rufai could interfere with witnesses and ongoing investigations involving other suspects still at large.

The commission also alleged that he obstructed law enforcement officers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in February 2026.

It dismissed his health claims, stating that no medical evidence was provided.

In his ruling, Justice Khobo emphasised the seriousness of the charges and the prosecution’s concerns.

He said, “In the instant application… given the gravity of the nine-count charge… the interest of justice is best served by ensuring the Applicant remains available for an accelerated trial.”

The judge also faulted the medical argument, noting, “The Applicant… has failed to provide sufficient medical evidence to justify the grant of bail on health grounds.”

The court consequently ruled, “the Defendant/Applicant’s application for bail pending trial fails and is hereby REFUSED.” It ordered that El-Rufai remain in ICPC custody pending trial.

Justice Khobo also directed that proceedings be conducted on an accelerated basis, fixing June 1, 2, 3, and 4, 2026, for day-to-day hearings.

For now, the former governor remains in custody as the court prepares to commence substantive hearing of the case.
