Edo ex-PDP Chieftain criticises Tinubu’s Plateau visit

BENIN CITY — A political leader in Edo State and former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Oteghe Adams, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his recent visit to Plateau State following the killings in Angwan Rukuba near Jos.

Adams described the visit as inadequate, expressing concern that the president did not proceed to the affected community but instead remained at the Jos airport.

According to him, the decision denied the president the opportunity to obtain first-hand information and directly sympathise with victims and residents impacted by the violence.

“Why can’t he go to the communities and see for himself? A visit limited to the airport amounts to nothing more than optics,” Adams said.

He questioned the purpose of the trip, arguing that a visit that did not include the scene of the incident fell short of expectations for national leadership during a crisis.

Comparison with Global Leadership

Adams drew a comparison with former United States President George W. Bush, referencing his response to the September 11 attacks, where Bush visited Ground Zero to address the nation and show solidarity.

He described such actions as emblematic of leadership during moments of national grief and called for similar gestures from Nigerian leaders.

Calls for Accountability

The Edo politician also raised concerns about the broader handling of security challenges, questioning the role of security chiefs and the level of urgency in responding to violent incidents across the country.

While acknowledging the efforts of security personnel, he stressed the need for stronger leadership and motivation at the highest levels.

Adams further urged Nigerians to hold public office holders accountable, adding that national unity and public confidence depend on visible and empathetic leadership in times of crisis.
