Edo govt moves to tackle devastating flooding in Useh community

BENIN CITY — The Edo State Ministry of Environment and Sustainability has conducted an on-the-spot assessment of severe flooding and erosion ravaging Useh Community in Egor Local Government Area, assuring residents of immediate government intervention.

Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Nosa Adams who led the assessment team, described the situation as severe and unacceptable, stressing the urgency of decisive action.

He disclosed that preliminary findings revealed extensive damage, necessitating the immediate engagement of consultants alongside the ministry’s engineering team to develop a comprehensive and practical solution.

According to him, nearly 100 houses have already been submerged, a development he described as intolerable for a community within the Benin City metropolis.

Adams said the ministry was committed to alleviating the suffering of affected residents and had directed its consultants and engineers to collaborate on an effective and sustainable flood control strategy.

Speaking on behalf of the community, the Enogie of Useh, HRH Ekpen Kelvin Edigin, commended the government’s swift response, but raised concerns over loss of lives and widespread property destruction.

He appealed for urgent and decisive measures to provide relief and prevent recurrence, stressing the need for lasting flood control solutions in the area.
