Edo, UNDP partner on smart, human-centred devt agenda

The Edo State Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have initiated discussions aimed at advancing a human-centred, technology-driven development strategy for the state.

The engagement took place at the UNDP office in Abuja, where the Commissioner for Communication and Digital Economy, Hon. Ohimai Ehijimetor, outlined the ministry’s vision for innovation and sustainable growth.

He revealed that the state has commenced an Integrated Smart State Programme designed to transition from traditional paper-based systems to a fully digitalised document management framework powered by e-government platforms.

Discussions between both parties centred on leveraging technology, digitisation, and clean energy to improve service delivery and quality of life.

A key highlight of the meeting was ongoing justice reform efforts, particularly initiatives involving young lawyers providing legal aid to prevent unlawful pretrial detention, thereby enhancing access to justice for vulnerable citizens.

The dialogue also explored future collaboration opportunities, including solar-powered healthcare facilities, youth innovation hubs to drive job creation, and gradual migration to a paperless government system to boost transparency and efficiency.

While UNDP emphasised its role as a technical partner, rather than a funding agency, both sides expressed commitment to building a structured partnership anchored on accountability, trust, and long-term impact.
