Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has warned lecturers of the institution against extorting the students.
Ogunwole, who gave the warning during the universityâs Senate meeting held on Thursday in Oye-Ekiti, said any lecturer caught would be sacked.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the vice chancellor lamented a series of complaints by students to the Deans of Students Affairs, Prof. Temitope Babalola, alleging extortion by lecturers.
Ogunwole said any Heads of Department and Deans of Faculties who fails to exercise oversight function in order to prevent extortion of students would be removed immediately.
The vice chancellor noted that the university has embarked on sanitising its system and upholding its public image.
Ogunwole said that collecting money from final year students called Final Year Batch (FYB) fee has been prohibited.
âThis university will no longer tolerate any act of indiscipline from anybody. It is only the Bursary that is empowered to collect money from students.
âNo lecturer is expected to collect money from the students, any lecturer who is caught will be sacked.
âAny Heads of Department and Deans of Faculties who fails to exercise oversight function and allows student extortion to take place in his domain will equally be removed.
âThe image we want from the public is a reputable one.
âWe want parents to be able to say, if you want the best for your children, go to FUOYE where there is sanity and morality where lecturers donât extort students,â he warned.
