The Ghanaian football community is in mourning following the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong, who was killed during an armed robbery attack on Sunday.

The 20-year-old was traveling with his teammates after a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex when their bus was intercepted on the Bibiani-Goaso road. 

According to reports, a group of masked gunmen blocked the road and opened fire on the vehicle as the driver attempted to reverse, forcing players and staff to flee into the nearby bushes for cover.

Frimpong sustained a fatal head injury during the assault and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. 

In a statement detailing the horrific event, Berekum Chelsea expressed gratitude to the police patrol team for their rapid response and thanked Bibiani Gold Stars and the residents of Ashiresu for providing temporary shelter and support to the traumatized squad. The club also acknowledged the prompt outreach from the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) during this period of profound grief.

The GFA released a statement expressing deep shock and sorrow over the loss of the promising young talent, noting that his dedication to the game embodied the spirit of the league. 

The association confirmed it is in constant communication with the Ghana Police Service to ensure a thorough investigation and that justice is served. Additionally, the GFA committed to reviewing and strengthening security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions to prevent such a tragedy from recurring. The entire football fraternity has been called upon to unite in support of Berekum Chelsea and Frimpong’s family as they navigate this devastating loss.
