Happily married couple left ‘sick to the stomach’ after DNA test showed they are cousins

A happily-married woman was left questioning her marriage after taking a DNA test to trace her ancestry.

.....

Celina and Joseph Quinones are married and share three children.

However, they were stunned by their genetic discoveries when the DNA test result came back.

Speaking on the Love Don’t Judge podcast, Celina said: “I started really diving into my DNA because I wanted to find out my heritage – my daughter is really dark-skinned, and my son has curly hair my middle child is light-skinned, and everyone would ask ‘what are you what are you?’ I couldn’t really give an answer except Native American.”

The couple’s  world was shattered when they learnt they were cousins.

Celina confessed: “When I realised that we were cousins I was a little sick to my stomach, and was thinking, ‘Should we get a divorce? Are we even supposed to be together?’”

Deciding to post the discovery on TikTok, she assumed it would be amusing, but the clip went viral, racking up millions of views and a torrent of hostile comments.

Celina was caught off guard by the reaction, stating: “I did not know it was going to blow up that big.”

She revealed the cruel responses, adding: “One person on there said ‘this is so disturbing, why would you marry your cousin?’.”

One troll wrote: “They look so much alike, how did they not know?”

Another wrote: “I feel bad for the kids, hopefully people don’t bully them.”

“I’d be embarrassed if I were those kids,” a comment read.

Reflecting on the shocking discovery, the couple’s teenage son said: “I feel a little bit weird about it, because it’s not something you want to brag about or put out to the world or anything.”

He continued: “If they found out before they got married I think there’d be something obviously wrong with that but since they found out after there’s there’s not one single problem.”

Astonishingly, not a single relative recognised one another at Celina and Joseph’s wedding ceremony.

It subsequently came to light that Joe’s paternal grandmother had been adopted, which led to the oversight owing to inadequate record-keeping.

Reflecting on the remarkable close-knit nature of her community, Celina explained: “Colorado seems so big, but it’s really not that big. Everyone knows everyone, and most likely, everyone is related.”
