He Wants To Protect His Name – Amaechi Reveals Why Tinubu Appointed Amupitan As INEC Boss

Former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has raised concerns about Nigeria’s political direction and the way elections are managed in the country.

.....

Naija News reports that he made the remarks while speaking at a political gathering that had major opposition figures in attendance, including Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Amaechi spoke about the appointment of the current head of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan.

He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu chose a legal practitioner for the job in a way he believes was meant to avoid personal or political backlash.

He said that the decision may have been influenced by the need to protect personal reputation while handling sensitive national duties.

President Tinubu went and appointed somebody who is a lawyer. Unfortunately, he’s a lawyer like me, and he did not want a bad name,” Amaechi said.

The former minister compared the present situation with the leadership style under former INEC chairman Attahiru Jega, noting that many Nigerians now feel less confident about the electoral process. He also linked the growing public concern to wider issues in the country, including rising living costs and increasing pressure on citizens.

According to him, the current mood in the country shows that trust in public institutions is weakening, especially around elections and governance. He warned that if the situation continues without improvement, the gap between citizens and the government could become wider.
