Iran trolls Trump blockade with brutal swipe – 'soon you'll be nostalgic for $4–$5 gas'

President Donald Trump has been brutally mocked by an Iranian politician who shared an image of current petrol prices near the White House warning Americans soon “will miss them”. Following the collapse of peace talks led by Vice President JD Vance in Pakistan on Saturday, Trump announced in a social media post that the “United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.” The vital shipping route connecting the oil rich Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean has been shut down by Iran since February 28 when the US and Israel launched strikes against the Islamic Republic.

After the peace talks in Pakistan failed Iran said it was keeping the strait closed, only for Trump to announce hours later he would also keep it shut. The shutdown of the strait, which normally provides a route for ships to export 20% of the world’s oil and gas, has caused global financial chaos and sent inflation and fuel prices soaring in the United States. Taking a leaf out of Trump’s playbook, Iran’s Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, took to social media to share his views on Washington’s move to stage their own blockade.

Sharing an image of what he claimed were current US petrol prices in an area around the White House and Washington, Bagher Qalibaf taunted Trump and his supporters with the caption: “Enjoy the current pump figures. With the so-called ‘blockade’, Soon you’ll be nostalgic for $4–$5 gas.”

The speaker also shared a mathematical expression which appeared to equate to meaning a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would result in rising prices at the pump. According to CBS News, since the war began at the end of February ordinary Americans have seen petrol prices rise by more than 21% to between $4 and $5 a gallon.

Increasingly using bombastic language in his own social media posts, Trump also said America was “LOCKED AND LOADED”, adding that the American military “will finish up the little that is left of Iran”.

US Central Command has announced that it will begin a blockade of Iranian ports on Monday.

CENTCOM said the blockade would be “enforced impartially against vessels of all nations” entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas.

It said it would still allow ships traveling between non-Iranian ports to transit the Strait of Hormuz.

Traffic in the Strait has been limited even in the days since the ceasefire. Marine trackers say over 40 commercial ships have crossed since the start of the ceasefire.
