Jimoh Ibrahim Presents Credentials to UN Chief, Assumes Role as Nigeria’s Ambassador

Nigeria’s newly appointed Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has formally presented his letters of credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, marking the official commencement of his diplomatic duties.

The credential presentation ceremony took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Monday.

Confirmation of the development came from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who described the move as a key milestone in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement at the global level.

With the formal submission, Ibrahim is now fully accredited to represent Nigeria at the United Nations. In this capacity, he is expected to articulate the country’s positions on pressing international issues and participate actively in multilateral negotiations.

A letter of credence, typically issued by a country’s head of state, serves as official authorization for an ambassador to represent their nation abroad. The process is a critical step before an envoy can fully assume responsibilities.

Ibrahim’s appointment was announced in March 2026 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a broader deployment of 65 ambassadors to Nigerian missions worldwide. The list included both career diplomats and political appointees.

Among other notable postings, Femi Fani-Kayode was assigned to Germany, Isaac Adewole to Canada, and Olufemi Pedro to Australia.

Prior to his diplomatic posting, Ibrahim represented Ondo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, following his election in 2023. His nomination came after the Senate’s confirmation of ambassadorial nominees in December 2025.

As Nigeria’s Permanent Representative, he will serve as the country’s chief envoy at the UN, engaging with member states and the Secretary-General on issues including global peace and security, economic development, and international cooperation.

According to Ebienfa, the presentation of credentials signifies the completion of all formal diplomatic requirements.

“He has presented his letters, and it simply means he has started working,” he stated.
