Kano Assembly Withdraws Impeachment Notice Against Ex-Deputy Gov Abdulsalam

The Kano State House of Assembly has formally withdrawn its notice of impeachment against former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam, following his voluntary resignation from office.
.....
Naija News reports that the decision was taken during plenary on Tuesday (today), effectively bringing an end to the impeachment process initiated against the embattled official.
The withdrawal followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yangurasa, and was presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Isma’il.
The Speaker ruled that continuing with the impeachment process after Abdulsalam’s resignation would serve no purpose.
Speaking with journalists after the sitting, Hussaini said the Assembly had decided to discontinue all charges against the former deputy governor.
“We have withdrawn all charges against him, and the matter has been laid to rest. We will no longer pursue these offences because our role is limited to removing an official if found guilty. Since he has voluntarily resigned, how can we continue?” he said.
He added, “We are not the EFCC or ICPC; our mandate has been fulfilled.”

The development comes weeks after the Assembly, on March 5, 2026, initiated impeachment proceedings against Abdulsalam over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The move was triggered by a petition from the state executive, which accused the former deputy governor of irregularities during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024.
While presenting the petition earlier, the Majority Leader had noted that the impeachment notice was issued in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
With the withdrawal of the notice, the Assembly has effectively closed the chapter on the controversy, following Abdulsalam’s exit from office.
