Kano paid N32b gratuity, death benefits in three years — Yusuf

Kano governor Abba Yusuf has said the state has paid N32billion out of a N48bn gratuity and death benefits backlog.

Yusuf spoke on Wednesday while flagging off the sixth tranche of N5billion payment to retirees.

He said the liabilities were inherited from the administration of Abdullahi Ganduje.

He said: “When we came in May 2023, we inherited a N48 billion backlog of gratuity and death benefits from the previous administration.”

He added: “Alhamdulilahi, today I am happy to say that N27 billion has been settled in five tranches. With the payment of sixth tranche of N5 billion, we have now paid N32 billion out of the N48 billion backlog of gratuity and death benefits.”

Yusuf said the government is working to clear the outstanding balance before the end of the year.

He said: “The settlement of these outstanding gratuities and death benefits not only alleviates the hardship faced by affected families but also reaffirms the administration’s promise to restore trust in government and uphold social justice.”

The governor also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners for their patience and cooperation.

Some pensioners expressed appreciation for the payments and pledged support for the administration’s future political ambitions.
