Kebbi attack death toll rises to 24

The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has raised fresh concerns over the scale of violence in Kebbi State, revealing that at least 24 people were killed in a recent attack on Debe village in Shanga LGA. 

Speaking at a press briefing in Yauri on Thursday,  Kebbi attack death toll rises to 24, Rev. Fr Matthew Stephen Kabirat, the diocese’s director of social communications said the attack occurred on Easter Sunday at about 5:00 p.m. when suspected terrorists stormed the community.

Kabirat noted that the victims included Christians, Muslims and traditional worshippers, adding that the Diocese has compiled the names of those killed.

He further disclosed that the assailants destroyed key structures, including St Mary’s Catholic Church, the catechist’s residence, a mosque, shops, and several homes.

According to him, the violence extended to neighbouring communities such as Binuwa and Kalkame, where markets, the emir’s residence, and other buildings were also razed.

“The attackers specifically targeted men, particularly youths, and the assault continued into the following day, forcing many residents to flee for safety,” he said.

The Diocese said it is currently sheltering 491 internally displaced persons at St Dominic Parish in Yauri, warning of a growing humanitarian crisis.

Kabirat stressed that the displaced urgently require food, clean water, medical care and proper shelter, noting that the Church has begun distributing relief materials despite limited resources.

He called on the Federal Government, Kebbi State authorities, humanitarian organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to provide immediate support to affected communities.

The cleric also appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Nasir Idris to take decisive steps to restore security and enable displaced residents to return home safely.

He emphasised the need for long-term security measures, rehabilitation of affected communities, and sustained support for victims, while urging authorities to ensure justice and lasting peace.
