Man pleads guilty in federal court in crash that killed over 50 in Mexico

A 42-year-old Guatemalan man pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday, April 8,  to a felony offense related to a high-profile human smuggling operation. Daniel Zavala Ramos admitted his involvement in a 2021 conspiracy to transport undocumented migrants from Guatemala through Mexico to the United States, an attempt that ended in a catastrophic crash that claimed more than 50 lives.

The conviction follows the extradition of Ramos from Guatemala in 2025, and he now faces a possible sentence of life in prison.
 

The charges stem from an incident on December 9, 2021, in which a jampacked tractor-trailer hit a pedestrian bridge support and overturned near the Chiapas state capital in southern Mexico. Authorities described harrowing conditions, noting that at least 160 migrants were packed into the freight container. 

The crash resulted in at least 53 deaths, including unaccompanied children, and more than 100 others were injured. The site of the tragedy was approximately 160 miles from the Guatemalan border and 1,400 miles south of the Texas border.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the smuggling ring used a variety of dangerous transport methods, including cattle trucks, microbuses, and tractor-trailers. Prosecutors revealed that the conspirators utilized Facebook Messenger to coordinate identification documents and provided unaccompanied minors with scripts to use if they were intercepted by authorities.

Ramos is the first of six Guatemalans charged in connection with the crash to be convicted. While his sentencing is scheduled for July 7, legal proceedings for the remaining five defendants continue with a final pretrial conference set for June 3. Ramos specifically pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to bring migrants to the U.S. while placing lives in jeopardy and causing death and serious injury. 

The survivors of the 2021 crash, many of whom were from Guatemala, remain at the center of an ongoing international effort to dismantle the networks that profit from such high-risk journeys.
