Meet Adeolu Oreofe, the Nigerian spelling queen that conquered Africa at age 14

At just 14, Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe has etched her name into continental history, emerging as the 2026 African Spelling Bee Champion in the Junior Category at the competition held in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The Ekiti State-born spelling prodigy did not rise overnight. Her journey is a gradual climb built on resilience, setbacks, and steady improvement across multiple competitions.
From finishing second at the 2023 MTN Spelling Bee, to another runner-up finish at the 2024 Ekiti State Spelling Bee, placing fifth at the 2025 African Spelling Bee, and securing second place at the 2025 Nigeria Spelling Bee, Oreofe’s story has been one of consistent progression rather than instant success.
Her breakthrough finally arrived in 2026. After dominating the Ekiti State qualifiers, she went on to secure second place nationally in Port Harcourt before stepping onto the continental stage, where she outperformed contestants from over 20 African countries to claim the Junior title.
A student of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado Ekiti, Adeolu impressed judges with her composure, precision, and calm under pressure: qualities that separated her from a highly competitive field.
Her victory earned her a $5,000 educational scholarship and a ticket to represent Africa at the World Spelling Bee in China later this year.
Beyond the trophy, Oreofe’s achievement tells a deeper story—one of discipline, persistence, and belief in gradual growth. Each setback became a stepping stone, and each competition sharpened her craft until she reached the top of the continent.
Now crowned Africa’s Junior Spelling Champion, Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe stands as a symbol of excellence and determination. Her story reflects not just personal success, but the promise of young Nigerian talent on the global stage.
