The governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has stated that the military and other security agencies received an intelligence report on the impending attack on the 15 Task Force Brigade in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area, three days before the incident.
Zulum made the disclosure during a visit to the people of Benisheikh following the attack that led to the killing of a Brigade Commander, Brigadier General O.O Braimoh and other military personnel.
The governor who described the deadly terrorist attack as shocking and deeply troubling, said there is a need for an urgent review of military strategies in combating terrorism in the region.
“This is one of the most surprising attacks that I have witnessed in recent times. Credible intelligence about the impending attack had been available for approximately three days, and there is a need to reassess our security architecture to address emerging threats more effectively,” Zulum noted.
The governor expressed concern that an attack of such magnitude still occurred despite the intelligence warning to the security apparatus.
He also queried the local authorities over the awareness of the said intelligence even as the chairman of the Local Government Area confirmed the receipt of such intelligence.
Zulum also lamented over the gaps in strategies and communications which could have enabled such an attack to occur, irrespective of the warnings.
