NANS, LASU mourn female undergraduate killed by hit-and-run driver

The management of Lagos State University, Ojo, on Sunday confirmed the death of a 300-level student, Azeezat Abdul-Rasheed, who was killed in a fatal road accident in the Igando area of Lagos on Saturday.

The confirmation came after the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council, Lagos State, demanded transparency and accountability following the tragic incident.

PidomNigeria Metro gathered on Sunday that the student died in the hospital after being knocked down by a suspected hit-and-run driver at about 7 pm.

Reacting to the incident in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, NANS JCC Lagos, Ridwan Ajayi; Secretary, Kareem Mumini; and the Public Relations Officer, Aloba Ahmod, the student leaders expressed “profound grief” over the incident, describing the student’s death as “heartbreaking” and a reflection of the vulnerabilities faced by Nigerian students.

The association extended condolences to the bereaved family and the university community while affirming solidarity with all those affected by the loss.

The student body, however, stressed that the arrest of suspects alone is not sufficient, insisting on the need for a transparent and thorough investigation.

According to the statement, “The Nigerian student populace demands more than mere custody — we demand transparent, swift, and uncompromised justice.”

NANS further urged the police to provide clear updates on the progress of the case, including the identities of those involved and steps being taken toward prosecution.

Highlighting concerns over past incidents where justice was delayed or denied, the association warned against any attempt to allow the case to fade without accountability.

NANS also cautioned against politicising the tragedy, noting that the death of a student should not be used for personal or political gain.

The body assured students that it would continue to engage relevant authorities and monitor the case closely until justice is achieved, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the safety, rights, and dignity of Nigerian students.

In a statement shared on the school’s X handle @LASUofficial on Sunday, the management called for calm while commiserating with the bereaved family.

“The management of Lagos State University is aware of the tragic death of a 300-level student, Abdul-Rasheed Adenike Azeezat, following a hit-and-run accident on Saturday, 11 April 2026.

The driver has been arrested and will be charged to court.

“Students are encouraged to remain calm and not take the law into their own hands, as management continues to closely monitor proceedings to ensure that justice is served.

“We commiserate with the family of Abdul-Rasheed Adenike Azeezat, her colleagues, and the entire student body over the tragic loss. May her soul rest in peace,” the statement read.

The incident comes months after another fatal crash in November, which claimed the lives of three students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The accident, which occurred at Powerline Junction near Aleje, inward of the Ikorodu Roundabout, involved a Toyota Corolla (SMK 42 AJ), an MPV bus, and four tricycles.
