The Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has condemned the latest attacks by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on communities in Gwoza and Askira-Uba Local Government Areas of Borno State.

Naija News reports that the attacks, which occurred on Saturday, affected Ashigashiya village in Gwoza LGA and Kopul village in Askira-Uba LGA, leading to loss of property and displacement of residents.

Reports indicate that the attackers invaded Ashigashiya village, where they allegedly set houses on fire. A disabled household member was reportedly trapped in one of the buildings and was burned to death during the attack.

Several residential houses were also destroyed, while the assailants looted foodstuffs and livestock belonging to residents.

In a separate attack on Kopul village in Askira-Uba, many houses and shops were destroyed.

Although no casualties were recorded in the incident, residents reportedly fled into nearby bushes for safety following the invasion.

Reacting to the attacks in an interview with journalists in Maiduguri on Sunday, Ndume sympathised with the victims and renewed his call for the Federal Government to provide better equipment for security forces fighting insurgency.

He said, “Our Nigerian Armed Forces are doing their best in fighting Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists, but they are handicapped in terms of weapons.

“There is an urgent need for the federal government to Train, Equip, Arm, and Motivate (TEAM) the military forces.”

He stressed that modern military hardware was essential to defeat the insurgents.

“Our military and other security agencies should have access to Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, fighter jets and drones if we really want to end Boko Haram,” Ndume added.

Despite the concerns, Ndume commended the Nigerian Armed Forces, other security agencies, and local security groups for their efforts in combating insurgency.

He praised members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, hunters, and vigilantes for their sacrifices in supporting military operations.

The senator also lauded Cameroonian security forces for their swift intervention during the Ashigashiya attack.

According to him, their response helped repel the terrorists and prevented what could have been a more devastating assault on the community.
