Nnaji dumps PDP, backs ADC, calls for broad opposition coalition ahead of 2027

A former governorship aspirant in Enugu State, Prof. Jehu Onyekwere Nnaji, has announced his decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing the need for a credible political alternative and a united opposition front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In an Easter message to party faithful and stakeholders, Nnaji expressed concern over what he described as a drift toward a quasi one-party state in Nigeria. He warned that the increasing alignment of state governors with the ruling party could weaken democratic competition.

He argued that many of the ongoing political realignments are driven more by strategic interests than ideology, stressing the urgent need for a people-oriented political platform anchored on integrity, vision, and national purpose.

“There is an observable drift toward what may be described as a quasi one-party state, as a significant number of state governors increasingly align with the party at the centre,” he said.

The international law scholar noted that while such alignments may offer short-term political advantages, they highlight the necessity for a formidable opposition capable of restoring balance in the nation’s democratic space.

Nnaji, who previously contested the Enugu State governorship under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said the evolving political climate demands unity among opposition forces, adding that coalition-building is now critical to achieving electoral success in 2027.

“The path forward for all opposition forces is both clear and compelling—the imperative of unity. The formation of a broad-based, strategic coalition is no longer optional; it is essential,” he stated.

The former PDP chieftain maintained that his political movement has, over time, served as a rallying point for stakeholders across Enugu State, fostering dialogue and bridging divides. However, he cautioned against prioritising short-term gains over long-term collective progress.

Reiterating his political objectives, Nnaji said his mission remains to build a cohesive alliance, promote inclusive governance, and support the emergence of a credible presidential candidate from the Southeast in 2027.

He disclosed that, following extensive consultations, he is convinced that the ADC provides a viable platform to actualise these goals.

“Accordingly, I have taken the considered decision to align with the ADC, in furtherance of our shared commitment to equity, justice, and national renewal,” he said.

Nnaji urged his supporters and other stakeholders to remain steadfast and united, expressing optimism that Nigeria can achieve a more just, equitable, and progressive political order through collective action.
