Plateau Govt Relaxes Curfew As Tensions Ease

The Plateau State Government has announced a further relaxation of the curfew imposed on Jos North Local Government Area, citing what it described as “relative peace” following the recent deadly attacks in Angwan Rukuba.

Naija News reports that the decision was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the state government.

According to the statement, the revised curfew arrangement will take effect from Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

“Following the relative peace being experienced in Jos North Local Government Area after the attacks at Angwan Rukuba, government in consultation with security agencies has further relaxed the curfew hours earlier imposed,” the statement read.

Under the new directive, residents of Jos North are permitted to move freely between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily.

However, a dusk-to-dawn curfew from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. will remain in force.

Authorities urged residents to comply with the revised order and ensure that their activities are carried out within the permitted hours.

“Citizens are therefore urged to be mindful of this development and carry out their lawful duties within the relaxed hours not affected by curfew, while ensuring to observe the enforced curfew period of dusk to dawn,” the government added.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang also directed security agencies to intensify enforcement of the curfew to maintain peace and protect residents.

“The Executive Governor has directed all security agencies to strictly enforce the curfew to ensure the protection of lives and property, as well as to restore calm in the affected areas,” the statement said.

Residents were also advised to cooperate with security operatives and provide useful information that could help prevent further violence.

The curfew adjustment comes amid lingering tension in Jos North following the recent attacks in Angwan Rukuba, which left several people dead.

Among the victims was Abel Joro, a 200-level undergraduate of the University of Jos, who died after sustaining serious injuries during the violence.

Joro reportedly passed away at the Intensive Care Unit of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) after battling for his life for several days.

His death was confirmed by cleric Ezekiel Dachomo, who described the loss as heartbreaking.

“Abel Joro, a young 200-level student of UniJos full of life, full of dreams, full of hope is gone tonight,” Dachomo said.

“After fighting with everything he had to stay alive in the Intensive Care Unit at JUTH… this is too painful, this is too heavy for the heart to carry.”

The cleric also spoke about the emotional impact of the tragedy on the victim’s family and community.

“A mother somewhere is crying uncontrollably, a father is broken, a family shattered beyond words,” he said.

“He fought, he held on, he refused to give up, but the pain was too much for his body to carry.”

Reports indicate that the violence also claimed the lives of other students and a staff member of the University of Jos, heightening fears among residents and the academic community.
