Police track attackers of Bauchi female student

The Bauchi State Police Command has disclosed that it has launched a manhunt for perpetrators of an attack on a female student of Sa’adu Zungur University in Gadau, Itas/Gadau Local Government Area of the state.

The incident, which occurred on April 23, 2026, involved a 22-year-old student, Maryam Yakini, who resides off-campus.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Habib, said the command received a report at the Gadau Police Outstation about an unidentified suspect armed with a machete and knife who attacked the victim near Villa Lodge.

Habib explained that the student sustained serious injuries during the attack, including the severing of her left thumb and ear.

“The victim is currently responding to medical treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Azare. The assailant also robbed her of personal belongings, including two ATM cards (Opay and Access Bank) and her school identification card,” the statement shared with Arewa PidomNigeria further read.

Meanwhile, the police spokesperson debunked reports circulating on social media, claiming that the victim had died, describing such information as false and misleading.

“These claims are not only untrue but also represent a desperate attempt to incite panic within the student community,” he clarified.

The command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of students through its Safe School Initiative Programme, adding that security measures around off-campus areas would be strengthened.

As a result of the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, cautioned students against loitering or studying in isolated areas, particularly at nights.

Our correspondent reports that the management of Bauchi State owned university, Sa’adu Zungur University, has confirmed the attack.

The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan, made the confirmation in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that the affected student is a 200-level Biology Education undergraduate.

Hassan explained that the student was reportedly attacked by unknown individuals suspected to be phone snatchers on Thursday.

He said, “The unfortunate incident occurred outside the university environment, contrary to some misleading reports circulating on certain online media platforms suggesting that the attack took place within the university premises. The university management wishes to categorically state that this claim is false and does not reflect the reality of the situation.”

The statement pointed out that the Vice-Chancellor, Fatimah Tahir, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to the safety and security of students and staff across its three campuses.

According to the management, sustained collaboration with internal security structures and relevant agencies has ensured that no cases of insecurity have been recorded within the university campuses.

It further restressed that the Vice-Chancellor had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the State Commissioner of Police to strengthen collaboration and enhance security support for the university community.
