Pope Leo to Trump: I won’t be silenced over Iran war

Pope Leo XIV has issued a bold rebuttal to Donald Trump, US President asserting that he will not be silenced by political pressure or administrative threats.
It was gathered that the pontiff, speaking to journalists aboard the papal plane en route to Algeria on Monday, April 13, 2026, emphasized that his duty is to the Gospel, not to any political agenda.
The tensions between the two leaders have reached a boiling point following Trump’s recent scathing attacks on the Pope’s stance regarding global security.
Trump has accused the first-ever American-born Pope—elected in 2025—of adopting “liberal political positions,” particularly concerning the ongoing Iran conflict and US migration policy.
He stated, “I have no fear of your administration or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel. We are not politicians. We don’t deal with foreign policy with the same perspective you might understand it, but I do believe in the message of the Gospel as a peacemaker.”
Pope Leo XIV has been a consistent and vocal critic of the war in Iran, labeling it “unjust” and warning against a “delusion of omnipotence” driving the conflict.
He has also directly condemned the Trump administration’s migration policies, including mass deportations, describing them as “inhumane and contrary to human dignity.”
While the Vatican maintains its role as a neutral mediator, this latest exchange underscores a deep ideological rift between the White House and the Holy See.
As the US prepares to enforce a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the Pope’s call for dialogue over destruction remains a primary point of contention in an increasingly volatile global landscape.
