Senate confirms Tinubu’s nominee, Muttaqha Darma as housing minister

The Senate on Thursday confirmed the nomination of Muttaqha Darma as a minister of the federal republic of Nigeria, following his screening at plenary.

Darma, nominated by President Bola Tinubu, was approved after responding to lawmakers’ questions on his competence and plans to tackle the country’s housing challenges.

During the screening, the minister-designate pledged to work closely with the National Assembly to address Nigeria’s housing deficit, which he said affects over 100 million citizens.

“We will work together with the National Assembly to ensure that the challenge of housing is addressed,” he said.

Darma outlined plans to improve leadership within the housing sector, expand access to affordable homes, and strengthen institutional frameworks to enhance delivery.

He also stressed the importance of governance and accountability, noting that reforms would involve both public institutions and private sector participation.

Responding to concerns raised by lawmakers, including Adams Oshiomhole, Darma acknowledged the scale of the housing crisis but expressed confidence in overcoming it.

“I believe everything is possible. I will do everything within my capacity to close the gaps and improve the situation,” he added.

The nominee further assured senators that he would support efforts to stabilise communities, noting that security remains critical to sustainable housing development.

On urban planning, he pledged to prioritise the restoration of the master plan of Abuja.

The confirmation followed the earlier reading of the President’s request by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who subsequently referred the nomination to the committee of the Whole for consideration.

Darma, a mechanical engineer and former executive secretary of the petroleum technology development fund, is expected to bring technical expertise to the ministry at a time when demand for housing continues to outpace supply.

His confirmation comes despite past political controversy linked to his role in the 2023 elections, and is seen as part of the administration’s push to strengthen key infrastructure sectors.
