‘Some People Lie’ – Finally, Alaafin Addresses ‘Rift’ With Makinde, Olubadan

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, has dismissed speculation of a rift between him, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, insisting that his relationship with both leaders remains cordial.
.....
Naija News understands that the monarch made the clarification while speaking with journalists in Oyo town on Tuesday, stating that there was no misunderstanding between him and the governor.
According to him, any issues that may arise would be resolved privately.
“I have nothing against the government. The governor has been very nice. If there is anything, I will meet in person to solve it,” he said.
When asked about his position on the newly inaugurated Oyo Council of Obas, the Alaafin expressed support for initiatives aimed at promoting the development of the state.
He said the traditional institution remains committed to supporting efforts that contribute to peace and growth across Oyo State.
The monarch also addressed concerns about his absence from some recent state functions.
Oba Owoade explained that he had been indisposed for some time, which affected his attendance at public events.
“There is no form of misunderstanding anyway. I have a good relationship with my governor. I have been indisposed for some time now. If there is a function, I will attend,” he added.
Speaking on the widely circulated video showing a moment involving the Olubadan of Ibadan, the Alaafin said the incident had been misunderstood.
The video, which surfaced online last year, was recorded during the 2026 Inter-Faith service held at the Secretariat’s Grand Space behind the Oyo State House of Assembly in Ibadan.
During the event, Oba Owoade extended a handshake while seated, but Oba Ladoja appeared not to acknowledge the gesture.
The Olubadan later exchanged greetings with the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye, and subsequently greeted Governor Makinde and other dignitaries before taking his seat.
The moment generated public discussion on traditional protocol and royal hierarchy.
Clarifying the incident, the Alaafin said the Olubadan later explained that he did not notice the handshake at the time.

The monarch emphasised that the situation did not create any tension between them.
“My relationship with the Olubadan is cordial. Some people lie online to join the popular bandwagon. There is no misunderstanding,” he said.
“I extended my hand to him, but he later explained that he did not see it. I don’t see it as an offence.”
He added that both monarchs had interacted since then.
“After that incident, he called me, and we later met again at Aso Rock and during an iftar. There is no misunderstanding between us,” he said.
Oba Owoade attributed the speculation about a feud to misinformation circulating online.
He alleged that some bloggers and individuals were spreading false narratives about the throne.
“People peddling rumours about me; it is because of the throne. Bloggers create problems where there are none. It is part of the job. I have nothing against anybody,” he said.
The monarch also used the opportunity to highlight ongoing development efforts in Oyo town.
He disclosed that a land committee had been established to address land-related disputes within the area.
According to him, plans are also underway to construct a civic centre, while renovation works are currently ongoing at the Alaafin’s palace.
Oba Owoade further revealed that preparations are underway for his birthday celebration on July 18.
During the event, three individuals will be honoured with chieftaincy titles.
He also commended members of the media for their continued support of the palace, describing journalists as important partners in development.
The monarch reiterated his commitment to peace, unity and development, urging members of the public to disregard rumours and support traditional institutions.
