Trump claims he can 'take out Iran in one day'

Donald Trump has claimed he could “take Iran out in one day” by crippling the country’s energy infrastructure after peace talks collapsed. The US President issued the stark warning during an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo as tensions escalated over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the future of the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said military action against Iran could be swift and decisive and revealed he is considering a US-led naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz – one of the world’s most important shipping routes. He suggested the US Navy would intercept any vessel that had paid a toll to Iran in order to pass through the Strait, effectively choking off a key route used for global oil shipments. The comments came after talks between Vice President JD Vance and Iranian officials ended without agreement. Iran’s nuclear programme remained the central point of dispute during the failed negotiations, despite Trump previously suggesting Tehran had been prepared to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

Trump had earlier threatened to destroy Iran’s energy facilities outright, but his latest comments suggest the White House is now focusing on cutting off shipping access through the Strait of Hormuz instead.

The proposed blockade has raised fears of a major international crisis and concern among European allies over how far the US could go.

Trump previously claimed “other countries” would join the American-led operation, although he did not name them.

However, the UK has confirmed it will not take part.

A Government spokesperson said: “We continue to support freedom of navigation and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, which is urgently needed to support the global economy and the cost of living back home. The Strait of Hormuz must not be subject to tolling.”

The spokesperson added: “We are urgently working with France and other partners to put together a wide coalition to protect freedom of navigation.”

The Strait of Hormuz carries around 20% of the world’s traded oil and has been severely disrupted since fighting erupted on February 28.

In a post on his platform Truth Social, Trump said: “Iran promised to open the Strait of Hormuz, and they knowingly failed to do so.

“This caused anxiety, dislocation, and pain to many people and Countries throughout the World.”

He added: “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.”

“At some point, we will reach an ‘ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT’ basis, but Iran has not allowed that to happen by merely saying, ‘There may be a mine out there somewhere,’ that nobody knows about but them.

“THIS IS WORLD EXTORTION, and Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted.”

Over the weekend, dozens of ships managed to pass through the Strait during a temporary pause in the crisis.

The vessels included missile destroyers and minesweepers, which were sent in to clear sea mines allegedly laid by Iran in the shipping channel.

Trump also warned that any vessel which had paid what he called an “illegal toll” to Iran would not be granted safe passage.

He said: “I have also instructed our Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran.

“No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.”

Trump then issued one of his most aggressive warnings yet, saying any Iranian or “peaceful vessels” that resisted US action would be “blown to hell”.

He added: “We will also begin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits. Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!

“Iran knows, better than anyone, how to END this situation which has already devastated their Country.”
