U.S. Embassy Suspends Visa Appointments In Abuja

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the suspension of visa appointments at its Embassy in Abuja.

Naija News reports that the suspension was communicated in a post shared on the mission’s official 𝕏 account on Thursday.

The Embassy did not announce the reason for the Abuja closure or how long it will last, but asked applicants to check their emails for updates.

“U.S. Embassy Abuja is closed for visa appointments. Applicants should check their email for details on rescheduled appointments,” the statement read.

The mission, however, clarified that visa operations at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos remain active.

“Visa operations at U.S. Consulate General Lagos continue,” it added.

It also noted that American citizen services are still available in cases of emergency and by appointment.

“American citizen services are available in emergencies and by appointment,” the statement read.

Naija News earlier reported that the U.S. Department of State has authorised non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members to leave the U.S. Embassy in Abuja.

The Department, in an updated travel advisory issued on Wednesday, cited a deteriorating security situation across Nigeria.

The advisory stated that starting April 8, 2026, Americans are advised to reconsider travel to the country due to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.

It classified the overall travel advisory for Nigeria as “Level 3: Reconsider Travel,” while some states are at “Level 4: Do Not Travel.”

The department also added Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba states to the list of “Do Not Travel” areas, bringing the total to 23 states where travel is strongly discouraged.
